SUMMARY: Channels to Discern Carefully

SUMMARY: Channels to Discern Carefully

Bible Text: Proverbs 3:5–7

Trust in Yahweh with all your heart,
and don’t lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Don’t be wise in your own eyes.
Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil.

Bible Text: Proverbs 3:5–7

Memory Verse: Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Not all spiritual message comes through direct divine channels. Some messages originates through human and internal faculties such as emotions, reasoning, and inner impressions. These channels are not inherently wrong, but they must be tested carefully because they can be influenced by both truth and error. Without discernment, you may mistake emotional impulses or personal thoughts for divine guidance. Spiritual maturity requires learning to evaluate these internal signals in alignment with God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.

Emotions: Emotions communicate the condition of the heart but do not determine spiritual truth. Feelings such as fear, excitement, peace, or anxiety may reflect internal states but are not always reliable indicators of God’s voice. Psalm 42:5 “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? … hope thou in God.” Emotions must be submitted to God’s truth rather than allowed to control your decisions.

Reasoning: Reasoning is a valuable gift from God that allows you to think, evaluate, and understand. However, human reasoning is limited and cannot fully comprehend divine wisdom.Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD.” Reasoning must be submitted to God and guided by Scripture and the Holy Spirit.

Inner Impressions: Inner impressions may come as thoughts, promptings, or inward feelings. These impressions can originate from the Holy Spirit, the human mind, or external influence. 1 John 4:1 “Test the spirits whether they are of God.” Every inner impression must be tested and confirmed by the Scripture, spiritual peace, and godly counsel.

These channels require spiritual maturity, discernment, and careful evaluation. Spiritual maturity does not rely on emotions, reasoning, or inner impressions alone but submit them to God’s Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This protects against deception and ensures alignment with divine truth.

Action plans:

  • Pause Before Acting: When feeling strong fear, excitement, or urgency, delay major decisions. Ask: What exactly am I feeling; fear, rejection, pride, anxiety?
  • Find a Scripture that addresses your emotional state and declare it.
  • Journal repeated emotional triggers to identify where healing or growth is needed.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 29: SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD

SS&S 642: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way
While we do his good will, he abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obeyTrust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But his smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay
Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross
But is blest if we trust and obey

But we never can prove the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay
For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet
Or we will walk by his side in the way
What he says we will do, where he sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey

Prayers:

  1. Father, help me discern correctly every emotional signal and inner impression.
  2. Lord, teach me to submit my reasoning to Your divine wisdom.
  3. Holy Spirit, guide me to walk only in truth and spiritual clarity.
