Text: 2 Timothy 4:3–4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Entertainment Replacing Anointing
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:4 “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.”
A major symptom of spiritual famine in today’s church is when entertainment replaces anointing. This happens when the desire to please people becomes greater than the hunger to please God. In such times, ministers perform instead of ministering, choirs entertain instead of worshipping, and congregations applaud talent instead of encountering the Spirit. The atmosphere may be lively, but heaven is unmoved.
Apostle Paul foresaw this crisis when he warned in 2 Timothy 4:3–4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth.” This prophecy is now a reality, the truth is often traded for trends, and power for popularity.
Entertainment creates emotion, but anointing breaks yokes. The difference is profound: entertainment excites, but the anointing transforms. In Isaiah 10:27, the Bible says, “The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” No song, sermon, or show can change a life without the presence of the Holy Spirit.
In an hospital where doctors hold concerts instead of surgeries. The patients may clap and laugh, but they remain sick. That is what happens when the church prioritizes performance over power people leave emotionally stirred but spiritually unchanged. The goal of ministry is not to impress but to impart.
Jesus’ ministry was marked by the power of the Spirit, not popularity contests. Acts 10:38 says, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil.” When the anointing is present, transformation follows, captives are freed, hearts are convicted, and sinners are saved.
The church must return to the altar of brokenness and prayer. The anointing flows where humility reigns and the fear of God is restored. We must choose depth over display, truth over theatrics, and glory over glamour. As Zechariah 4:6 reminds us, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the LORD.”
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 51: SS & S 235: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE
- My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine ;
Now hear me while I pray ;
Take all my guilt away ;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine.
- May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire :
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be—–
A living fire.
- While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide :
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away ;
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.
- When ends life’s transient dream—-
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll—-
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove ;
Oh, bear me safe above—-
Today’s Prayer

- Father, anoint every minister and worshipper with fresh oil that breaks yokes and transforms lives in Jesus’ name. Amen.
- Lord, awaken every believer deceived by worldly attraction; rekindle their hunger for genuine encounters with You.
