SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE:Moral Compromise and Worldliness

Text: James 4:4–8

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Moral Compromise and Worldliness

Memory Verse: 1 John 2:15“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

When a believer begins to lose spiritual appetite, the heart becomes weak, and that weakness often shows up as moral compromise and worldliness. This is one of the clearest symptoms of spiritual famine. When the soul no longer feeds on the presence and Word of God, it starts seeking satisfaction elsewhere, in pleasure, comfort, or worldly approval.

The Bible warns in James 4:4, “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?” Spiritual famine makes it easier to justify sin and harder to feel conviction. What once broke your heart before God no longer stirs you. Like Samson, who lost his strength while still thinking he had it, many believers continue outward religious routines but inwardly have lost the fire of devotion.

A tree planted by rivers of water flourishes, bears fruit, and stays green even in heat. But when the water dries up, its leaves wither, and its fruit falls off. That’s what happens when we disconnect from the Word and prayer. The flow of grace stops, and compromise creeps in quietly.

Moral compromise begins subtly: small lies, minor indulgences, secret sins. Over time, these tiny cracks and widen into open rebellion. Romans 12:2 warns, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Worldliness shapes the mind to think like culture instead of Christ. It replaces conviction with convenience.

Worldliness is not just wearing or owning worldly things, it’s loving them above God. Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve two masters.” When the world becomes our master, holiness becomes optional. But when Christ is our treasure, sin becomes bitter and holiness becomes beautiful.

In seasons of spiritual famine, we must run back to the altar. Only the fire of the Holy Spirit can purify our desires and restore hunger for righteousness. When the Word fills your heart again, worldliness loses its grip. The cure for compromise is communion with Christ, the Living Bread that satisfies forever.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 4; SS&S 281: COME, FOR THE FEAST IS SPREAD.

  1. Come, for the feast is spread;

Hark to the call!

Come to the living Bread,

Broken for all;

Come to His “house of wine,”

Low on His breast recline;

All that He hath is thine;

Come, sinner, come.

  1. Come where the fountain flows-

River of life-

Healing for all thy woes,

Doubting, and strife;

Millions have been supplied,

No one was e’er denied;

Come to the crimson tide,

Come, sinner, come.

  1. Come to the throne of grace,

Boldly draw near;

He who would win the race

Must tarry here;

Whate’er thy want may be

Here is the grace for thee,

Jesus thy only plea:

Come, Christian, come.

  1. Come to the Better Land,

Pilgrim, make haste!

Earth is a foreign strand-

Wilderness waste!

Here are the harps of gold,

Here are the joys untold-

Crowns for the young and old:

Come, pilgrim, come.

  1. Jesus, we come to Thee,

Oh, take us in!

Set Thou our spirits free;

Cleanse us from sin!

Then, in yon land of light,

Clothed in our robes of white,

Resting not day nor night,

Thee will we sing.

Today’s Prayer

  1. Lord, deliver me from every worldly desire that competes with Your love in my heart. Restore my hunger for Your Word and presence.
  2. Father, renew my mind and cleanse me from every form of moral compromise. Let my life reflect Your holiness.
  3. Lord, awaken Your Church from spiritual lukewarmness and worldliness. Rekindle the fire of holiness and separation unto You in every believer.
