SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Weak Faith, Fear, and Confusion

Text: Mark 4:35–40

35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.

36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Weak Faith, Fear, and Confusion

Memory Verse: Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

One of the sure signs of spiritual famine is the weakening of faith. When the Word of God no longer fills the heart, fear takes its place. Faith feeds on the Word it grows strong through revelation and fellowship. But when the Word is neglected, faith becomes fragile, easily shaken by trials, and confused by circumstances.

In Mark 4:35–40, when storm arose on the sea, the disciples though were with Jesus panicked and cried, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Jesus calmed the storm and asked, “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?” This shows that spiritual famine doesn’t mean God is absent it means we have stopped trusting His presence.

When faith is weak, fear grows strong. Fear is faith in the wrong direction, believing more in the problem than in God’s power. Confusion then follows, clouding judgment and disrupting peace. James 1:6–8 warns that the doubting believer “is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed… unstable in all his ways.”

A lamp that is running low on oil, the flame drops, then fades. The oil represents the Word and Spirit. Without fresh filling, even the brightest believer grows dim. Weak faith causes us to depend on feelings instead of truth when emotions changed, so does our confidence. But faith anchored in the Word stands steady even when everything else shakes.

In Psalm 119:105, the Word of God is described as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Without it, confusion reigns. A believer starving for the Word will fumble in darkness, unsure of what God is saying or doing. That is why Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” Faith connects us to divine guidance, peace, and victory.

Spiritual famine turns warriors into worriers. But the moment we return to the Word, faith rises again. The Holy Spirit rekindles assurance, fear flees, and confusion clears. The cure for weak faith is not striving harder; it is feeding deeper on God’s truth

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 4; SS&S 281: COME, FOR THE FEAST IS SPREAD.

  1. Come, for the feast is spread;

Hark to the call!

Come to the living Bread,

Broken for all;

Come to His “house of wine,”

Low on His breast recline;

All that He hath is thine;

Come, sinner, come.

  1. Come where the fountain flows-

River of life-

Healing for all thy woes,

Doubting, and strife;

Millions have been supplied,

No one was e’er denied;

Come to the crimson tide,

Come, sinner, come.

  1. Come to the throne of grace,

Boldly draw near;

He who would win the race

Must tarry here;

Whate’er thy want may be

Here is the grace for thee,

Jesus thy only plea:

Come, Christian, come.

  1. Come to the Better Land,

Pilgrim, make haste!

Earth is a foreign strand-

Wilderness waste!

Here are the harps of gold,

Here are the joys untold-

Crowns for the young and old:

Come, pilgrim, come.

  1. Jesus, we come to Thee,

Oh, take us in!

Set Thou our spirits free;

Cleanse us from sin!

Then, in yon land of light,

Clothed in our robes of white,

Resting not day nor night,

Thee will we sing.

Today’s Prayer
