SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE:Dullness in Prayer and Worship

Text: Revelation 3:14–18

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL FAMINE: Dullness in Prayer and Worship

Memory Verse: Matthew 15:8 “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Dullness in prayer and worship is one of the clearest signs of spiritual famine. When the soul loses its passion for communion with God, dryness begins to take root. Prayer becomes a routine rather than a relationship, and worship turns into performance instead of intimate fellowship. This dullness is not a surface issue; it reflects a deep hunger and disconnect within the spirit.

Revelation 3:15–16 paints this picture vividly: “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot… because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Lukewarmness is a spiritual sickness, it is the absence of fire, zeal, and love for God’s presence. When you become spiritually faint, the altar of prayer grows cold, and worship becomes empty.

The Bible shows that prayer is the lifeline of the believer. Luke 18:1 says, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” When prayer becomes dull, it means the spiritual life is fainting. The Holy Spirit fuels vibrant prayer: without His presence, words become dry and empty. Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit helps our infirmities, when we stop depending on Him, prayer loses power.

Worship also suffers during spiritual famine. True worship flows from a heart overflowing with love and gratitude. John 4:24 says, “They that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” When the spirit is weak or distracted, worship becomes mechanical, songs are sung, hands are raised, but the heart is disengaged.

Dullness in prayer and worship often comes from sin, worldliness, or exhaustion of the inner man. Psalm 42:1–2 describes the cry of a revived heart: “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.” When the longing for God returns, the dryness breaks and spiritual fire is restored.

Beloved, if your prayer life feels heavy and your worship lacks joy, it is time to seek renewal. Return to the secret place. Ask the Holy Spirit to rekindle your hunger. Spiritual fire is not lost forever it only needs to be stirred again 2 Timothy 1:6.

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 30: SS&S 902: MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS

  1. My hope is built on nothing less
    Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness
    I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
    But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

  1. When darkness veils His lovely face
    I rest on His unchanging grace
    In every high and stormy gale
    My anchor holds within the veil.

  1. His oath, His covenant, His blood
    Support me in the whelming flood
    When all around my soul gives way
    He then is all my hope and stay
  2. When He shall come with trumpet sound
    Oh, may I then in Him be found;
    In Him, my righteousness, alone,
    Faultless to stand before the throne

Today’s Prayer

  2. Father, deliver me from lukewarmness and fill me afresh with the fire of Your Spirit.
  3. Lord, awaken the Church from spiritual dullness and restore genuine worship in every congregation.
