THE BLINDNESS OF MEN

Text: 2 Corinthians 4:1-7

1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

THE BLINDNESS OF MEN

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:14: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

One of the greatest tragedies of sin is that it blinds man to the glory of God. Apostle Paul makes this clear in 2 Corinthians 4:3–4: “But if our gospel be hidden, it is hidden to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” Sin does not merely corrupt behavior; it darkens perception. It prevents the sinner from seeing the beauty of Christ and the transforming power of the gospel.

The blindness of man is not physical but spiritual. Satan, being described as the “god of this world,” actively veils the minds of unbelievers. His strategy is deception, distraction, and distortion of the truth. He blinds people through pride, worldliness, false religion, and indulgence in sin so that the light of Christ cannot penetrate. Just as natural blindness makes a person unaware of colours or landscapes, spiritual blindness makes a soul unable to grasp the glory of God’s salvation.

The unsaved may sit under powerful preaching, read the Scriptures, or even admire moral principles, but without the illumination of the Holy Spirit, they cannot perceive the deeper reality of Christ’s glory. Apostle Paul affirms this in 1 Corinthians 2:14: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” The Word that should bring life seems irrelevant, heavy, or foolish to the spiritually blind.

This condition is desperate, but not hopeless. Christ is the Light of the world John 8:12. The veil can be lifted when you turn to the Lord 2 Corinthians 3:16. The Spirit of God shines into the heart, opening the eyes of understanding, and replacing blindness with vision. Conversion is not just a change of will but an unveiling of sight.

Therefore, believers must pray earnestly for the lost, that God would open their eyes and deliver them from darkness. Only then can they see the surpassing worth of Jesus Christ and walk in His marvelous light

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 19; THEN JESUS CAME

  1. One sat alone beside the highway begging
    His eyes were blind, the light he could not see
    He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows
    Then Jesus came and bid his darkness flee

Refrain

When Jesus comes the tempter’s, power is broken
When Jesus comes the tears are wiped away
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay

  1. From home and friends, the evil spirits drove him,
    Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
    He cut himself as demon powers possessed him,
    Then Jesus came, and set the captive free.

3.     “Unclean! unclean!” the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its victim,
Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.

4.     Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
Then Jesus came, and night was turned today.
  1. So, men today have found the Savior able,
    They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
    Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
    Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

Today’s Prayer

  1. Oh Lord, by Your Spirit, open the eyes of my understanding. Remove every veil of sin, pride, and deception that blinds me from seeing the fullness of Your glory, in Jesus’ name.
  2. Father, I reject every satanic veil placed over my life and destiny. Let the light of Christ break through every darkness the enemy has used to blind me, in Jesus’ name.
  3. Lord, I lift the lost and unsaved around me. Shine Your glorious light into their hearts, break the power of deception, and draw them into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
