The Cost of Worldliness

The Cost of Worldliness

Bible Text: 1 John 2:15–17

15 Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s.

17 The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.

Memory Verse

Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

A ship is designed to sail on water, but the moment water enters the ship, it begins to sink. The danger is not that the ship is in the water; the danger is when the water gets into the ship. Christians live in the world, but the world must never live in them. When worldly values, desires, and priorities enter the believer’s heart, they gradually weaken faith and pull the soul away from God. A ship sinks because of what gets inside it, not because of what surrounds it. Worldliness is one of the greatest threats to a believer’s spiritual life because it often appears attractive, harmless, and socially acceptable. It is not merely about outward appearance or material possessions; it is a heart that values the world’s system above God’s Kingdom. It is loving what God hates, pursuing what God has forbidden, and allowing worldly pleasures to replace wholehearted devotion to Christ.

Apostle John gives a clear warning: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.” He explains that the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are not from the Father but from the world. These three temptations were present in the Garden of Eden and were the very temptations Satan presented to Jesus in the wilderness. They remain the enemy’s primary weapons against believers today.

The cost of worldliness is devastating. It weakens spiritual passion, dulls the conscience, and gradually distances the believer from intimate fellowship with God. A worldly heart becomes more concerned about popularity than purity, comfort than consecration, and earthly success than eternal reward. Prayer becomes a routine, worship loses its sincerity, and God’s Word no longer occupies first place in the heart.

One of the greatest examples is Demas. Paul once described him as a fellow labourer in the ministry, but later wrote with sadness, “Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:10). The world stole what ministry could not protect because his heart gradually shifted from Christ to worldly attractions. The tragedy of worldliness is that it offers temporary pleasure while robbing believers of eternal rewards. Everything this world offers is temporary. Wealth fades, popularity disappears, beauty diminishes, and earthly achievements eventually pass away. John reminds us that “the world passeth away… but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” God does not call His people to isolation but to transformation. Believers are to influence the world without imitating it. They are called to shine as lights in darkness, demonstrating the values of God’s Kingdom through holy living, love, humility, and obedience.

Today, examine your heart honestly. Has the world quietly taken the place that belongs to Christ? Refuse to exchange eternal treasures for temporary pleasures. Live with eternity in view, knowing that those who love God above the world will never lose what truly matters.

Action Plans

  • Examine your priorities regularly, ensuring that your love for Christ surpasses every worldly pursuit and desire.
  • Guard your heart by choosing godly influences and avoiding anything that weakens your devotion to God.
  • Invest your time, talents, and resources in God’s Kingdom rather than pursuing temporary worldly pleasures.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 126: GRANT US SELF-CONTROL

By Apostle James Abache
Stanza 1

Grant us, O Lord, a heart that’s true,
To follow Your ways in all we do.
In moments of trial, give strength to stand,
And guide our hearts with Your mighty hand.

Refrain

O Spirit, fill us, make us whole,
With self-control to guard our soul.
May we reflect Your love and grace,
As we seek to know Your face.

Stanza 2

When passions rise and temptations call,
May Your peace be our shield through it all.
Help us to choose Your righteous way,
And trust in Your word, day by day.

Stanza 3

In every step, let Christ be seen,
A life of purity, calm, and serene.
Empowered by grace, we humbly choose,
To honour You in all we do.

Outro

Grant us, O Lord, a heart that’s kind,
With self-control, Your peace we find.
Forever faithful, we will be,
As You lead us to victory.

Today’s Prayer

1. Father, separate my heart from worldly desires and help me love You above everything else.

2. Lord, transform my mind daily and keep me faithful to Your Kingdom and eternal purposes.

3. Father, preserve my family from worldly influences and establish them firmly in wholehearted devotion to Christ, in Jesus name. Amen.
