Text: 2 Timothy 4:3–4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables
THE DANGEROUS COMFORT OF SPIRITUAL PAINKILLERS
Memory Verse: Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Going to the doctor with a serious illness and instead of giving you medicine to cure the disease, the doctor only gives you painkillers to stop the pain. At first, you feel better, but the sickness keeps growing inside. You might even get used to just feeling okay on the surface and never really get healed. This is dangerous because the real problem is ignored. In our spiritual lives, something similar can happen. Sometimes preachers and counsellors give what I can call spiritual painkillers, words or messages that make people feel good but do not help fix the real issues inside their hearts.
For example, saying, “God understands” when someone keeps choosing to live in sin without change. Or preaching only about blessings and happiness but never talking about repentance or turning away from sin. Sometimes, pastors avoid hard topics like hell, holiness, or personal responsibility. Some even encourage people to “follow their hearts” instead of following God’s Word. These spiritual painkillers make people comfortable, but they do not bring true healing. Over time, people get used to hearing only what feels nice. They begin to ignore or reject teaching that challenges them to change. The Bible warns us about this in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, saying that people will “gather teachers to suit their own desires” and “turn away from the truth.”
Some ministries have built their success on giving people comfort without correction, offering only words that soothe but never confront sin or call for repentance. But that is not the full message God wants us to hear or share. Apostle Paul said in Acts 20:27, “I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” He preached everything God said, even when it was hard. True spiritual leaders should do the same, balancing grace with truth and helping people find real healing, not just temporary comfort.
Let us not settle for messages that only mask pain. Instead, seek God’s full truth, which leads to healing, growth, and freedom.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 28: SS&S 190: ” COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME“
-
- 1. Come, Holy Spirit, come;Let Thy bright beams arise,Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
2. Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.
3. Convince us of our sin,
Then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.
4. ‘Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole.
5. Dwell therefore in our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free ;
Then we shall know, and praise, and love
The Father, Son, and Thee !
