Text: Psalm 51:10
1. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
THE MESSAGE THAT PIERCED THE HEARTS
Memory Verse: Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
Acts 2:37 “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart…” On the Day of Pentecost, something powerful happened, not just in the sky or the room where the disciples sat, but deep in people’s hearts. Peter stood up and preached about Jesus. He told the crowd that Jesus had been sent by God, but instead of receiving Him, they had rejected and crucified Him. Yet, God raised Him from the dead and made Him both Lord and Christ.
Peter’s words were not soft or easy. He spoke the truth boldly. The people listening were not just curious anymore, they were convicted. The Bible says they were “pricked in their heart.” This means their hearts were stabbed, not by a knife, but by the truth of God’s Word. The Greek word katanusso used here means to be pierced deeply, like being stabbed with a sharp object.
This same word is related to what happened to Jesus in John 19:34, where the Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear. Blood and water came out. It was a deep wound. Likewise, when Peter preached, his words through the power of the Holy Spirit, the word cut into the hearts of the people. It exposed their sin, guilt, and their need for a Saviour.
They did not get angry or walk away. Instead, they asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” This is the response of a heart that is truly touched by God. They realized they needed to change. They wanted to make things right. Peter answered, “Repent, and be baptized… in the name of Jesus Christ… and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” That day, about 3,000 people gave their lives to Christ.
The message that pierced their hearts was not full of fancy words or clever stories. It was the truth about Jesus, His love, His death, and His power to save. When the Word of God is preached with the Holy Spirit’s power, it reaches deep into the soul. It brings life, healing, and a desire to change. Today, that same message still pierces hearts and leads people to repentance receiving new life in Christ.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 28: SS&S 190: COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME
- Come, Holy Spirit, come;
Let Thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
2. Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.
3. Convince us of our sin,
Then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.
4. ‘Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole.
5. Dwell therefore in our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free ;
Then we shall know, and praise, and love
The Father, Son, and Thee !
