Text: Ephesians 5:8-11
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
THE NATURE OF DARKNESS
Memory Verse: Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
Darkness in the Scripture is not just the absence of physical light; it is the absence of God’s presence, truth, and holiness. It represents sin, deception, ignorance, and the influence of Satan. To walk in darkness is to live apart from God’s direction, vulnerable to traps and destruction.
Darkness is Deceptive: Sin rarely appears as dangerous at first. Darkness hides the true nature of evil, presenting itself as harmless, attractive, or even beneficial. Apostle Paul warns that “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” 2 Corinthians 11:14. The enemy uses disguise to lure people into compromise. What begins as “just a little lie” or “harmless pleasure” grows into a snare that blinds the soul.
Darkness is Directionless: Jesus said, “If a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him” John 11:10. Without God’s light, people stumble through life, making choices that lead to frustration and regret. Darkness clouds judgment, leading people to follow emotions, peer pressure, or worldly wisdom instead of God’s Word. The result is confusion and wasted destiny.
Darkness is Destructive: James 1:15 explains how sin grows: “When lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” Darkness does not stay harmless, it multiplies into bondage, sorrow, and eternal separation from God. Like poison disguised as sweet drink, sin eventually destroys those who entertain it.
The nature of darkness can be compared to a blindfolded man walking near a cliff. At first, he feels confident because he can still move, talk, and breathe. But each step brings him closer to disaster, though he does not see it. One more careless move, and he is plunged into ruin. This is how sin operates, it blinds, deceives, and destroys. Only the light of Christ can remove the blindfold and guide us safely.
James warns that temptation begins with desire. Desire, when unchecked, conceives sin, and sin eventually brings death James 1:15. Hidden compromises, even if small, grow into bondage. That is why Isaiah 50:10 reminds us to trust God in seasons of uncertainty rather than seeking answers in the dark, and in sinful shortcuts. Isaiah 50:10 reminds us that when we find ourselves in seasons of confusion or uncertainty, we must not turn to darkness for answers. Instead, we are called to trust in the Lord and stay upon our God. Light and darkness cannot mix 2 Corinthians 6:14. We must renounce double-living and fully embrace Christ, the Light of the world John 8:12.
To walk in the light is to live openly before God, guided by His truth, rejecting secrecy and compromise. It is a call to holiness, integrity, and dependence on Christ alone. You cannot please God while flirting with darkness. Victory comes only when we decisively renounce hidden works of sin and walk wholeheartedly in the light. Only then can God’s glory shine through us.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 87 “REDEEMED FROM CHAINS OF DARKNESS” By Apostle James Abache
-
- From the depths of darkest night,
Where the shadows hide the light,
I was bound in chains of fear,
Held by powers far and near.
But my Savior heard my cry,
Spoke His name and set me free.
Now in His grace, I rise and stand,
Redeemed by His mighty hand.
Refrain:
I am free, I am free,
By His blood, delivered me!
No more chains, no more strife,
I am saved, and restored to life.
Hallelujah, praise the King,
From the pit, He’s called me out to sing!
- Satan’s whispers lost their power,
In the light of that great hour,
When the Lord’s voice called me whole,
Restoring peace unto my soul.
No more torment, no more night,
I am free in His great light.
He has broken every chain,
Nevermore to be enslaved!
Bridge:
In His name, the demons flee,
At His feet, I find my peace.
Victory, forever mine,
In the blood of Christ divine!
- Now I walk in freedom’s light,
With my Savior by my side,
For the One who freed my soul,
Now leads me to a life made whole.
I’ll forever praise His name,
For He broke the devil’s claim,
And forever I will sing,
Of the One who is my King.
