THE POWER OF A STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUTH

THE POWER OF A STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUTH

Text: Proverbs 27:5-6

5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.

6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

THE POWER OF A STRAIGHTFORWARD TRUTH

Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction.”

When John the Baptist spoke, he did not try to impress people. He did not sugarcoat his message or avoid hard topics. He spoke the truth direct, clear, and bold. And instead of rejecting him, the crowd leaned in and listened. In Luke 3:10, we see their honest response:
“What shall we do then?”

This simple question shows that something powerful happened in their hearts. The truth did not push them away, it pulled them closer to God. That’s the power of the Holy Spirit conviction. It does not just make people feel bad, it awakens a desire to change, to be made right with God. This kind of conviction produces three things:

  1. A hunger for change: They did not want to remain the same.
  2. Openness to instruction: They were ready to hear more.
  3. Action based on truth: They wanted to do what God required.

We see this same effect in Acts 2:41, after Peter preached boldly. It says the people “gladly received” his word. The Greek word there, apodechomai, means to welcome like a gift. Even though Peter’s message confronted their sin, they received it with joy.

Why would someone gladly welcome hard truth? Because truth, even when painful, sets people free. Lies may feel comfortable for a moment, but they leave the soul in chains. People are not looking for more flattery or motivational talk. Deep down, they long for truth that cuts the lies away, truth that heals, truth that gives real hope.

Straightforward truth, spoken with love and power, is what the world needs. We do not help people by softening the message or avoiding repentance. We help them by speaking clearly and courageously, just like John and Peter did. The power is not in the clever words, it is in the truth itself. And when the Holy Spirit moves through that truth, hearts are pierced, lives are changed, and people ask the question that opens the door to salvation: “What shall we do?”

COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 57: SS&S 20: COME SING, MY SOUL, AND PRAISE THE LORD

      1. Come sing, my soul, and praise the Lord,

      Who hath redeemed thee by His blood;

      Delivered thee from chains that bound,

      And brought thee to redemption ground.

      Refrain:

      Redemption ground, the ground of peace

      Redemption ground, oh, wondrous grace

      Here let our praise to God abound,

      Who saves us on redemption ground !

      1. Once from my God I wandered far,

      And with His holy will made war ;

      But now my songs to God abound ;

      I’m standing on redemption ground.

      1. Oh, joyous hour when God to me

      A vision gave of Calvary;

      My bonds were loosed,my soul un-bound :

      I sang upon redemption ground.

      1. No works of merit now I plead,

      But Jesus take for all my need ;

      No righteousness in me is found,

      Except upon redemption ground.

      1. Come, weary soul, and here find rest ;

      Accept redemption,and be blest :

      The Christ who died, by God is crowned

      To pardon on redemption ground.
