The Price for Freedom

The Price for Freedom

Bible Text: John 8:31–36

31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him,
“If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.

32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say,
‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them,
“Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.

35 A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever.

36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Memory Verse

John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

A bird may have the strength to fly, but if one of its legs is tied with a thin cord, it will never soar no matter how hard it flaps its wings. The cord may appear small, but it is enough to keep the bird grounded. Many people desire freedom, success, and victory, yet remain bound by the invisible cords of sin, fear, pride, unforgiveness, addiction, or unbelief. Freedom is never obtained by wishful thinking alone, it requires someone to break the cord and a willingness to leave the bondage behind. Jesus paid the ultimate price to break every chain, but we must embrace the freedom He offers.

Freedom is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity. He did not create man to live in bondage to sin, fear, guilt, or Satan. Throughout the Scripture, God’s redemptive plan has always been to bring His people out of captivity and into liberty. The Israelites were delivered from Egyptian slavery, but their physical freedom pointed to a greater spiritual freedom that Christ would accomplish on the Cross.

In John 8:31–36, Jesus declared that those who continue in His Word are His true disciples. They would know the truth, and the truth would make them free. This freedom is not merely political, financial, or emotional; it is freedom from the dominion of sin and every form of spiritual bondage.

However, freedom has a price. Jesus paid the price with His own blood. According to 1 Peter 1:18–19, we were not redeemed with corruptible things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. Our freedom was purchased at Calvary, where Christ bore our sins, shame, and condemnation.

Although Christ has paid the price for our redemption, we must respond appropriately. Freedom requires repentance, surrender, obedience, forgiveness, and steadfast faith. Many remain in bondage not because Christ’s sacrifice is insufficient, but because they refuse to release the chains, they have grown comfortable carrying. True freedom is also maintained through a persistent walk with Christ. The believer who remains in God’s Word, submits to the Holy Spirit, and lives in obedience enjoys lasting liberty. Freedom is not the absence of responsibility; it is the power to live according to God’s purpose without being controlled by sin.

Today, Jesus still extends His invitation to every bound heart. Whatever the chain may be, He alone can break it completely. When Christ sets a person free, that freedom is genuine, complete, and eternal.

Action Plans

  • Identify every area of bondage in your life and surrender it completely to Jesus Christ today.
  • Continue daily in God’s Word, allowing His truth to transform your mind and strengthen your freedom.
  • Walk in obedience to the Holy Spirit, refusing to return to habits that once held you captive.

Covenant Gate Hymnals 65: “FREEDOM IN CHRIST”

By Apostle James Abache
Stanza 1

Once I was lost in shadows,
Bound by fear and sin’s decree,
But Christ has broken every chain,
He set my spirit free.
No more a slave to sorrow,
His love has rescued me;
In Him, I find my refuge,
His grace my victory.

Refrain

I am free, I am free,
No longer in bondage, I stand redeemed;
In the light of His mercy,
I walk in joy, my heart’s agleam.
For the Spirit of life within me,
Declares my soul is free,
Forever I’ll sing His praises,
In Christ, I am free!

Stanza 2

The weight of sin is lifted,
His peace now fills my soul,
With every step, I follow,
He makes my spirit whole.
Fear no longer holds me captive,
For love has set me free;
I rise in faith and courage,
A new identity.

Bridge

Chains are broken, hope restored,
In His arms, I find my peace;
Every fear and doubt released,
In His love, my soul’s increased.
