The Price of Gratitude

The Price of Gratitude

Bible Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

Memory Verse

Psalm 100:4 “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

A person who receives a precious gift but never expresses appreciation may eventually forget the value of what was given. Gratitude is like a mirror that reflects the heart; it reveals whether we recognize the source of our blessings. A grateful heart does not focus only on what is missing but acknowledges the goodness of God in every season. Like a tree that produces fruit because it is deeply rooted, a thankful person produces joy, peace, and faith because their heart is rooted in the awareness of God’s faithfulness. Gratitude is not only a response to abundance; it is a spiritual discipline that remains even during difficult moments.

The price of gratitude is choosing thanksgiving when circumstances are not perfect. It requires looking beyond temporary challenges and remembering that God remains faithful. The Israelites often struggled because they forgot God’s past deliverance, but those who remembered His works were strengthened to trust Him. Jesus demonstrated gratitude before miracles happened. Before feeding the multitude, He gave thanks. Before raising Lazarus, He thanked the Father. Gratitude positions the heart to recognize God’s power and faithfulness.

The price of gratitude is the sacrifice of complaining. It is easy to praise God when everything is going well, but true gratitude is revealed during seasons of difficulty. A thankful believer trusts that God is still working even when circumstances are not favourable. Gratitude changes our perspective. It reminds us of God’s past faithfulness and strengthens our confidence for the future. When we thank God, we shift our focus from problems to His promises.

Many biblical victories were connected to thanksgiving. Paul and Silas worshipped God in prison, and their praise created an atmosphere for divine intervention. King David repeatedly expressed gratitude because he understood that his victories came from God. A grateful heart attracts joy because it refuses to be controlled by bitterness, envy, or dissatisfaction. Gratitude also strengthens relationships because thankful people recognize and appreciate the contributions of others.

The believer who pays the price of gratitude develops spiritual maturity. Instead of asking only, “What has God done for me?” they begin to ask, “How can my life honour God?” Gratitude transforms blessings into worship and challenges into opportunities to trust God.

God desires people who will remember His goodness, acknowledge His mercy, and give Him praise in every season. Gratitude is not just a response to blessings; it is a lifestyle that honours the Giver above the gifts.

Action Plans

Covenant Gate Hymnals 51: SS & S 235: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE,

Stanza 1

My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine ;
Now hear me while I pray ;
Take all my guilt away ;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine.

Stanza 2

May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire :
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be—–
A living fire.

Stanza 3

While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide :
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away ;
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

Stanza 4

When ends life’s transient dream—-
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll—-
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove ;
Oh, bear me safe above—-
