Bible Text: Philippians 2:5-8
5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
: James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
A mighty tree grows tall because its roots go deep into the soil. The deeper the roots, the stronger the tree stands against storms. Humility is like those hidden roots. It may not always be seen, celebrated, or admired, but it is what sustains you when greatness, influence, and success come. Many people desire to be lifted by God, but few are willing to embrace the humility that prepares them for that elevation. Humility is not weakness; it is the strength to submit to God, acknowledge our dependence on Him, and treat others with honour. A proud heart resists correction, but a humble heart remains teachable.
Jesus Christ demonstrated the highest example of humility. Though He was the Son of God, He chose to serve, wash the feet of His disciples, and surrender His will to the Father. The price of humility is laying down pride, personal ambition, and the desire to always be recognised.
Humility is the pathway to divine lifting. God opposes pride because pride places man in a position that belongs to God alone. When you become dependent on personal strength, wisdom, or achievements, you gradually disconnect from the source of true success.
The price of humility includes accepting correction, forgiving easily, serving faithfully, and giving God the glory for every achievement. Humility allows God to entrust greater responsibilities to you because a humble person will not misuse the blessings of God.
Moses was described as the meekest man on earth, yet God used him to lead Israel. David humbled himself before God, and God established his throne. Those who humble themselves before God do not lose their value; they position themselves for greater purpose.
True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is recognizing that everything you have comes from God and using it for His glory.
Action Plans
- Begin each day acknowledging God’s authority over your plans, decisions, and achievements.
- Allow wise counsel and godly instruction to shape your character.
- Look for opportunities to bless, encourage, and support people without seeking recognition.
Covenant Gate Hymnals 51: SS & S 235: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE,
My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine ;
Now hear me while I pray ;
Take all my guilt away ;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine.
May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire :
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be—–
A living fire.
While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide :
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away ;
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.
When ends life’s transient dream—-
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll—-
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove ;
Oh, bear me safe above—-
