Text: Genesis 2:1–7
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
THE SOUL OF A MAN
Memory Verse: Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
The creation of man by God is a threefold process, involving the body, spirit, and soul. In Genesis 2:7, God formed man’s body from the dust of the earth. Then He breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life, His Spirit, causing man to become a living soul. This shows that man is not just flesh and blood but also spirit and soul.
According to Ecclesiastes 12:7, at death, the body returns to the earth, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. But what happens to the soul? Hebrews 9:27 provides the answer: “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” The soul does not die. Instead, it continues to exist and will face judgment. The eternal destiny of the soul, either in heaven or in hell, is determined by the choices made while living.
So, what exactly is the soul? The soul is the invisible, non-physical part of you that makes up your true self. It is where emotions like love, joy, anger, and fear resides. It is also where we make choices, whether good or evil. The soul includes our will, which accepts or rejects thoughts, temptations, and influences. It is the part of us that interacts deeply with both God and the world.
The soul is also the battleground between good and evil, between God’s Spirit and the devil’s temptations. Whoever you yield to; God or Satan, will influence and possibly control your soul. That is why the soul is often called the “engine room” of life. Every action begins with a decision in the soul.
Science and medicine cannot fully explain the soul. It is spiritual, beyond human comprehension, and entirely God’s design. He alone has ultimate authority over it.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 38: SS & S 616: TAKE MY LIFE, AND LET IT BE
- Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
- Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love ;
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
- Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King ;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.
- Take my silver and my gold ;
Not a mite would I withhold :
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose.
- Take my will, and make it Thine ;
It shall be no longer mine :
Take my heart—-it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
- Take my love : my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store :
Take myself; and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
