Text: Proverbs 3:11-12
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:
12 For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
THE SPIRITUAL DYNAMICS OF CONVICTION
Memory Verse: Romans 2:4 “Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”
Conviction is like a fire alarm in the house. It does not destroy the house; it wakes you up before the fire spreads. Many people confuse conviction with condemnation, but they are not the same. Condemnation comes from the enemy and leads to shame, hopelessness, and fear. It says, “You have failed, and there’s no way back.” But conviction comes from the Holy Spirit. It says, “Yes, you have sinned, but here’s the way back to God.”
Conviction has three main parts:
- It reveals sin. Just like a flashlight in a dark room, conviction shines into the corners of your heart. It helps you see what you were ignoring or hiding. Sin loses its power when it is exposed.
- It confronts self. Conviction challenges the lies you tell yourself, your pride, your excuses, your self-righteousness. It forces you to face the truth, not to shame you, but to free you. It is like a mirror that shows a smudge on your face, not to mock you, but to help you clean it.
- It invites grace. Conviction does not leave you broken. It shows you Jesus, the One who forgives, restores, and makes you knew. It is like a doctor telling you the diagnosis but then handing you the cure.
When the people asked John the Baptist in Luke 3:10, “What shall we do?”, they were not reacting out of fear. They had been touched by the Spirit. The message had pierced their hearts, but it also gave them a way forward. That is the beauty of true conviction: it cuts deep, but it also heals.
A skilled surgeon with the blade may hurt, but it removes the disease. In the same way, the Holy Spirit uses the truth of God’s Word to perform spiritual surgery, not to destroy you, but to save you. Conviction is a gift, not a punishment. It is God’s way of waking you up and pulling you closer to His heart.
COVENANT GATE HYMNALS 75: The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Wisdom By Apostle James Abache
-
- O Spirit of God, so pure and true,
We seek Your wisdom, to guide us through,
In every moment, in every way,
Teach us to walk, to watch, and pray.
Refrain:
Come, Holy Spirit, enlighten our hearts,
With wisdom divine, Your truth impart,
Guide us in knowledge, in all that we do,
To live for Christ, and make all things new.
- You search the depths of God’s holy mind,
Reveal His will to hearts so blind,
With understanding, You lead us along,
In Your sweet presence, we are made strong.
- Grant us the wisdom to love and forgive,
To walk in Your ways, to humbly live,
The Spirit of truth, the Spirit of grace,
Transform our hearts and seek God’s face.
- O Spirit, our Teacher, our Guide, our Friend,
In Your wisdom, we find no end,
Empower our lives with love and light,
To walk in the path of eternal sight.
